Monday, 3/1 1:30 on

The De Anza College Offices of Instruction, Diversity and Staff Development are proud to

invite you to participate in our fifth annual conference dedicated to student success

What’s love Got to do with it?

Cultivating Learning Environments Conducive to Success for All Students

Please accept our invitation to participate in 2 days of workshops and plenary sessions committed to asking and addressing QUESTIONS about how we can help our students build the skills necessary for their success. THIS IS A FREE CONFERENCE!

* 2010 Save The Dates:     Thursday, April 15 from 1:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Friday, April 16 from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

We love what we do! We are constantly growing and learning in our intention to meet the needs of our students and in our capacity to help them reach for their dreams. It is this deep commitment to our students and to our campus community that facilitates an atmosphere of successful learning.

This conference is designed to capture the energy and commitment embodied within this spirit of love.

Each day of the conference will feature a keynote speaker, two sessions of 90 minute long workshops, and an adapted World Café based collaborative “harvesting” at the end of each day in order to capture new ideas, applications, and strategies for student success. Food will be provided.

This conference will be QUESTION based (not answer based!) and will focus on the following themes…

* What is the place of love in an academic setting? How can we foster communities of support and learning among our students, ourselves, and the world at large?

* Who are we? How can we become more aware of how our students perceive us and what can we do to help them understand who we really are? Who are our students? How can we develop a deeper understanding of their diverse identities and learning needs?

* Why is it important that staff, faculty and administrators work together as a community? How can we improve our collective ability to help students learn how to navigate the expectations and requirements of a college?

* How can we capture our students’ hearts, heads and hands? How can we make learning fun? Will building student-centered content and/or pedagogy encourage student engagement and move them to action?

This conference is based on interaction and dialogue (or conversation). Each 90 minute workshop will be facilitated by a workshop presenter and a trained conference facilitator and will be organized according to the following format:

Time

What

All conference participants will be encouraged to sign up for follow up workshops held during the end of spring quarter 2010. These discussions will offer us the opportunity to reflect upon and evaluate our applications.

When the Chancellor’s Office established the Basic Skills Initiative, most California community colleges requested funding. The BSI funded projects required for curriculum development, Student Learning Outcomes, and accreditation projects. BSI funds are still available, but in more restricted ways. This PCI will explain the BSI and the “Poppy Copy” report, and discuss BSI projects (one-time and on-going). The presenter will explain why one application was funded while another was not and offer advice based on experience. Handouts will be provided.
The Basic Skills Initiative: How is your institution implementing the Basic Skills Initiative? What have been (will be) the challenges you and your department face? Please join us for a discussion of these issues.

Saturday, 12:15 pm – 1:15 pm
