“Papers” is the story of undocumented youth and the challenges they face as they turn 18 without legal status.

There are approximately 2 million undocumented children who were born outside the U.S. and raised in this country. These are young people who were educated in American schools, hold American values, know only the U.S. as home and who, upon high school graduation, find the door to their future slammed shut.

65,000 undocumented students graduate every year from high school without “papers.”

It is against the law to work or drive. It is difficult, if not impossible in some states, to attend college. Currently, there is no path to citizenship for these young people.

Graham Street Productions produced this film in association with El Grupo Juvenil (the “Papers” Youth Crew). These youth producers were actively involved in all aspects of the production. They are working in collaboration with the youth who want to tell their stories as well as community organizations around the country who are working to change immigration policy on behalf of these young people.

Three years ago, the RP Group released Basic Skills as a Foundation for Success in the California Community Colleges, popularly known as the Poppy Copy. This report and its companion self-assessment guide were widely used by California community colleges to develop strategies for meeting the needs of basic skills students. Now, a newly updated version of this report has been published by Jossey-Bass under the title Student Success in Community Colleges: A Practical Guide to Developmental Education. This version includes valuable information such as how investing in a comprehensive basic skills infrastructure can be a financially sustainable model for the institution. If you order it now on www.josseybass.com <http://www.josseybass.com/> , you will receive a 20% discount by using code HAE20.

Please accept our invitation to participate in our fifth annual conference dedicated to student success.

What’s love Got to do with it?

Cultivating Learning Environments Conducive to Success for All Students

WHEN: Thursday, April 15 from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and

Friday, April 16 from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. – 2010

*Partial participation is possible and can be identified on the online registration form.

WHERE: De Anza College Conference Rooms A + B

CONFERENCE THEME: What’s Love Got To Do With It?

We love what we do! We are constantly growing and learning in our intention to meet the needs of our students and in our capacity to help them reach for their dreams. It is this deep commitment to our students and to our campus community that facilitates an atmosphere of successful learning.

This conference is designed to capture the energy and commitment embodied within this spirit of love.

CONFERENCE DETAILS: We will be asking questions and engaging in inquiry about them…

This conference is FREE! Each day of the conference will feature a keynote speaker, two sessions of 90 minute long workshops, and an adapted World Café based collaborative “harvesting” at the end of each day in order to capture new ideas, applications, and strategies for student success. Food will be provided. Attendees from De Anza will earn PGA credit (full timers) and stipends (part timers).

This conference will be QUESTION based (not answer based!). Each 90 minute workshop will begin with the 15 minute presentation of a question and will then engage in a 30 to 40 minute dialog about the question. The following questions will provide a foundation for the workshops:

* What is the place of love in an academic setting? How can we foster communities of support and learning among our students, ourselves, and the world at large?

* Who are we? How can we become more aware of how our students perceive us and what can we do to help them understand who we really are? Who are our students? How can we develop a deeper understanding of their diverse identities and learning needs?

* Why is it important that staff, faculty and administrators work together as a community? How can we improve our collective ability to help students learn how to navigate the expectations and requirements of a college?

* How can we capture our students’ hearts, heads and hands? How can we make learning fun? Will building student-centered content and/or pedagogy encourage student engagement and move them to action?

REGISTRATION: Please register at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/6HVDKYW

Conference enrollment is limited. Please register early to ensure your spot! Workshops during the conference will be first come, first served and will be limited to room capacity… You will be encouraged to attend workshops in many disciplines and service areas in order to stretch your comfort zone.

Conference registration confirmation will include an invitation to read essays in preparation for the event!

Hosted by The De Anza College Offices of Instruction, Diversity and Staff Development
