Fall 2010!

The Faculty Inquiry Network and Bay Area Learning Network will be co-hosting a one-day conference, “Intersecting Literacies” that will be of great interest to anyone who teaches writing or makes writing an important part of their students’ intellectual experience.  We would like to welcome not only Faculty, but Students as well! We will listen to student voice as well as have participating Students in the workshop itself.

The State’s Basic Skills Initiative’s Learning in Networks for Knowledge Sharing (LINKS) and Berkeley City College welcomes you to a workshop presentation delivered by USC’s Center for Urban Education (CUE) on 19 March from 8:30am-1pm at Berkeley City College in Room 212.  (For more information about CUE please check out their site:  http://cue.usc.edu/equity_model/.)

Presenters from CUE will demonstrate how to use their Benchmarking Equity and Student Success Tool with cohort migration data available for all Peralta colleges at http://eperalta.org/wp/indev/program-review-equity-fact-books/.  Presenters will also discuss “The Typology of Institutional Equity Agents” and “Syllabus Review for Equity and Success”.

The CCC BSI Professional Learning Network, 3CSN—funded by the CCCCO ESL/Basic Skills Professional Development Grant—is pleased to announce the first in a series of events focused on student completion.  These day-long events will be hosted by colleges in four new network regions. During the practicum, we will: 1. Analyze the problems students face in completing their goal(s), and 2. Develop a framework to investigate ways to build links for student success on the classroom and campus level.

In subsequent sessions and with technical assistance coordinated by our regional network coordinators, we will assist local campuses as they explore interventions that can be used in classroom and student services areas. Part of this “Learning In Networks for Knowledge Sharing” or LINKS will involve partnering closely with our many sister networks, including the Faculty Inquiry Network, RP Group/BRIC Project, Hewlett Leaders, Career Ladders Project, California Leadership Alliance for Student Success, Reading Apprenticeship, Digital Bridge Academy, Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, and many others.  We will also be collaborating through LINKS with the upcoming BSI Leadership Institute and Advanced Leadership Institute, UC Berkeley’s Tillery Institute, and the annual Strengthening Student Success Conference. Additional research and evaluation support for LINKS will be provided by UCLA’s Department of Education.

We invite you to attend the kick-off session at the campus located closest to you; registration is free, but space is limited, so you will want to act quickly.

CONFERENCE THEME:  What’s Love Got To Do With It?

We love what we do!  We are constantly growing and learning in our intention to meet the needs of our students and in our capacity to help them reach for their dreams.  It is this deep commitment to our students and to our campus community that facilitates an atmosphere of successful learning.

This conference is designed to capture the energy and commitment embodied within this spirit of love.

CONFERENCE DETAILS:  We will be asking questions and engaging in inquiry about them…

This conference is FREE!  Each day of the conference will feature a keynote speaker, two sessions of 90 minute long workshops, and an adapted World Café based collaborative “harvesting” at the end of each day in order to capture new ideas, applications, and strategies for student success.  Food will be provided.  Attendees from De Anza will earn PGA credit (full timers) and stipends (part timers).

This conference will be QUESTION based (not answer based!).  Each 90 minute workshop will begin with the 15 minute presentation of a question and will then engage in a 30 to 40 minute dialog about the question.  The following questions will provide a foundation for the workshops:

* What is the place of love in an academic setting?  How can we foster communities of support and learning among our students, ourselves, and the world at large?

* Who are we?  How can we become more aware of how our students perceive us and what can we do to help them understand who we really are?  Who are our students?  How can we develop a deeper understanding of their diverse identities and learning needs?

* Why is it important that staff, faculty and administrators work together as a community?  How can we improve our collective ability to help students learn how to navigate the expectations and requirements of a college?

* How can we capture our students’ hearts, heads and hands?  How can we make learning fun?  Will building student-centered content and/or pedagogy encourage student engagement and move them to action?

Attendees wishing to receive college credit for this workshop must be enrolled in EDU88.2 (section #3232) no later than Thursday, February 25^th.

Application for Admission:  Anyone wishing to enroll in EDU88.2 must have an application on file with the Admissions & Records Office prior to enrolling.  If you are new to Mendocino College or have not been enrolled in one of the last two previous semesters you must complete an application for admission.  Applications may be submitted online via the Mendocino College website:  www.mendocino.edu.  Alternatively, a paper application printed from the Mendocino College website at www.mendocino.edu/tc/pg/641/application_for_admission.html may be submitted.   Paper applications must be mailed in or hand delivered to the Admissions & Records Office.

At the 2009 Strengthening Student Success Conference, we heard presentations
from a few colleges/districts that are providing credit courses that faculty
can take to advance their knowledge of teaching and learning. (Credit
courses can be an incentive for faculty development as they can be used to
advance on salary schedules.) We are interested in knowing how many other
